TODAY'S QUOTE:  "I have not failed.  I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

TODAY'S TOPIC:  Change Your Language

Did you ever notice how the words you say to yourself totally affect how you feel about something? Also, the tone in which you say the words can dictate if you feel empowered or disempowered.

Let me give you an example.  I have a client who needed to write an article for a local newsletter.  She is an expert in a particular household service, and most people don’t know much about this area.  The purpose of the article was to inform the public on her area of expertise, which would ideally lead to more exposure for her business and more revenue.

She had never written an article for publication, so she wasn’t quite sure what to do.  Needless to say, she kept putting it off, which obviously hurt her opportunity to get exposure, especially since her area of expertise is in a summer service.  As the days passed, she was letting easy opportunities slip away.  When we discussed it, she called the article, “That darn article!”  When speaking about it, her tone of voice suggested she was unhappy, and the article was just another obligation.

I asked her to change her language around the article.  Rather than calling it “that darn article,” she started calling it “that money making article.”  Boy oh boy.  Her whole demeanor changed when she said that, and she became excited about it.  In fact, she has already completed the first draft.

Nothing changed on the event.  The only thing that changed was how she labeled it and the words she used to describe it.  One way frustrated her and made her dreadful, and the other way empowered and excited her.

Let me give you another example.  I am currently on a 9-day food cleanse.  Today is day 8, and I’ve had only liquids (mostly water) all day.  I will enjoy only liquids tomorrow too.  Tonight, I started thinking about how I still have one more day to go.  I made the comment, “And I still have one more day!”  This comment made me feel pretty discouraged and made me feel like I’d never make it another day.

But then I changed my language.  I started to say, “I only have one more day.”  Immediately, I felt like I could get through one more day, and one more day didn’t feel so bad.  Nothing changed.  I still can’t eat.  But I changed my language, and it made all the difference.

So how about it?  Are you ready to empower yourself by making the very easy switch in language?  Changing your language is an easy way to make you feel good and to propel you into action.
