TODAY'S QUOTE:  Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal

TODAY'S TOPIC: Motivation & Leverage

Have you set goals recently?  When January rolls around, many people set resolutions and then proceed to forget them or break them by the end of January.  For most people, they break them because they just don’t have enough motivation, and motivation is key to reaching any dream or goal.

So how do you create motivation?  One way is the create leverage over yourself.  Leverage propels you forward and gets you over life’s bumps.  Leverage is the consequences of not reaching the goal and the rewards for reaching it.  Let’s face it, often we run into obstacles and roadblocks when we go after our dreams and desires.  This is when we need leverage the most.

Let me give you an example.  About six years ago, I set my goal to enter into a loving and fun relationship with a wonderful man.  I set the goal but then realized I had some unconscious limiting beliefs that were holding me back and I had a lot of fear around men and relationships.  Therefore, with my coach, I formulated a plan to get over those beliefs and fears.

Part of the plan included a goal for me to approach at least five men and get their names.  The point was not to meet my dream man this way, but rather to face my fear of rejection.  The thought of doing this terrified me.  Therefore, my coach and I created leverage so that when the fear rose up or the motivation died, I would have *leverage* to push me through that goal.

To create leverage, I agreed to eat a can of cat food if I did not approach at last five men.  Every time I felt the fear of approaching a man, I just thought of how disgusting I would feel eating a can of cat food.  My coach also served as leverage, because I knew he would hold me accountable.

Do you think I accomplished that goal?  With leverage like that, you bet I did!  I also took a huge step in releasing my fears.  In fact, a few months later, I met my man, and we’ve been happily together for over five years.

So how can you create leverage?  First, ask yourself what will happen if you don’t reach your goal.  Who will you hurt?  How will your relationships be affected?  Your family?  Your finances?  Your health?  Your spirituality?  On the other hand, when you reach your goal, how will your life change?  Who can you help?  How will your finances improve?  Your health?  Your relationships?

You can also create leverage by creating rewards, such as a massage or a vacation, for achieving your dreams and goals.  Like my can of cat food, you can also create immediate negative consequences for not achieving the goals.

Of course, hiring a coach is one of the most effective ways to create leverage.  I have a special right now for the 4th month free.  So if you really want to achieve the life you desire, don’t miss this special.
